Wiki Help/Good Wiki Style
This page contains a set of recommendations you should consider if you wish to make the best possible contribution to the content of this wiki.
- Keep it simple and understandable
- Always use English. It can be bad English, but still, make it English.
- Use language you'd be comfortable reading out loud (say "use", not "utilize").
- Keep it simple. Simple language often communicates better.
- Check for spelling and grammar errors. Errors distract attention from the content.
- Stick to the point
- Offer actual and specific fact or explicit advice.
- Use fewer words rather than many.
- Stay OnTopic.
- Give your contributions some thought
- If you want this to be a nice page, then make it one.
- Delete only if doing so adds value.
- If you don't have anything of value to add, don't. People will appreciate it.
- Edit only when you really think a page is lacking in some way.
- Place new information where it is easy to find and where it fits nicely in the flow of ideas.
- Remember that you are not the only contributor
- There are many others reading and editing these pages. Work with them.
- Who you are is mostly relevant in logs, not in the contents.
- So, generally, avoid the use of the first person ("I"). See how this page was written.
- I only sign my name when reporting experiences which are particular to me or my situation. In such cases, I write in the first person and I sign using two dashes and my name. --CiprianPopovici
- Respect others
- Every visitor and editor of this site has a responsability: to respect freedom and to enforce quality.
- Don't say things that are designed to make others mad. Practice civility and understanding.
- Watch your language! There are all kinds of people reading these pages, including kids.
- Think of the words you left behind. Would you be confortable speaking them in front of an auditorium of people who know you?
- Use the formatting
- Formatting of the text is important. It can help readers a lot.
- Learn at least the simple tricks (bold, lists, headings, separators, links). (See /TextFormattingRules.)
- Do not put spaces at the beginning of lines.
- Separate paragraphs with a blank line.
- You can run capitalized words together to make /WikiLinks.
- Use horizontal separators to make things easier to read. Lots of different comments with no separation can otherwise be confusing.
